The Vision
McHenry Hohnen Winery is located on a beautiful property on Rocky Road. Witchcliffe WA. It is located several kilometres off Bussell Highway, with limited public through-traffic.
When the current Vintners site on Bussell Highway. Witchcliffe became available, MHW owner Murray McHenry saw the opportunity to create a prominent showcase for McHenry Hohnen Wines.
Murray’s vision was to create an outlet that promoted the “crafting of wines that reflect the purity and character of place.” Vintners also stocks fine wines from all over the world as well as a range of local beers, accompanied by bistro-style menu with an emphasis on paddock-to-plate produce.
Guests can drop in for a glass and something small or stay for a meal, all in a relaxed wine bar setting. As the cellar door for McHenry Hohnen, the venue provides a welcoming and accessible way to experience the winery’s offering in a more prominent location.

The Team
As an experienced developer of numerous projects, Murray has a lifetime of experience in the hospitality industry. He previously owned a hospitality equipment company and knew precisely what layouts and equipment would best suit Vintners, having a major input into all aspects of the project.
Murray assembled a great team. I had worked with the builder Gordon Temby on various projects for over four decades, and in addition he had built many projects for Murray.
The interior designer Dominique Tiller brought a wealth of experience to the project which is evident in the intimacy, warmth and vitality that she has created.
All trades on the Vintners project were highly skilled and experienced, and it was a pleasure working with them. There was a positive energy on site at all times, as everyone realised that they were creating something special.
Planning & Design
Planning was complex and protracted, given adherence to the Witchcliffe Character Study and the complexities of dealing with public authorities and utilities. The result was a positive outcome of a contemporary building within a traditional gable roofed form.
The experienced team methodically dealt with each planning and compliance issue with perseverance and patience to navigate to a successful outcome.
The role of Theo Mathews Architect as the principal consultant was to guide and navigate the process.
